It’s scholarship season again! Since 2001, the Adrienne and Vernon O. Underwood Scholarship Program has been awarding generous scholarships to college-bound students of full-time Young’s employees. Over the past 18 years, the Underwood Scholarship Program has recognized 125 deserving students. This month, we’re excited to highlight four past recipients of our scholarship program. We look forward to announcing the winners of the 2019 scholarship in a few months.
Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of goals and aspirations, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an outside appraisal.
Monique Mansour was awarded the scholarship three times throughout her undergraduate and graduate career.
“The Underwood Scholarship helped pave the way for my academic and professional pursuits in a myriad of ways! I was fortunate enough to receive the scholarship throughout my undergraduate and graduate school years at Loyola Marymount University and at UC Riverside, respectively. I then went on to represent the United States as a Fulbright Scholar on the Mediterranean island of Malta upon graduating with my MFA degree. Since my return to California, I’ve been teaching public speaking and composition at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles full-time. I’m very grateful to have had the support of Young’s Market Company on my academic journey!”
Jennifer Hang was awarded the scholarship in 2012.
“The Underwood Scholarship helped me tremendously during my years at University of Southern California. The scholarship helped me to pursue my personal and academic goals and propelled me to where I am today. I attended USC for my undergraduate degree, where I studied communication. My college years were very formative and enriching, and I have the Underwood Scholarship to thank for their support. After USC, I went to UCLA Law and am now practicing law in Los Angeles.”
Lauren McNally received the scholarship in 2001 – the first year it was offered!
“The Underwood Scholarship allowed me to pursue my dream of becoming a mental health therapist so that I could help others. I completed my bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Spanish from UC San Diego, which is an accomplishment I’m very proud of. I then earned a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University, and have been working for the past 10 years as a bilingual Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, specializing in helping others who have been affected by a traumatic event. My college education at UC San Diego truly opened the door for me to reach these career goals, and I’m grateful for this scholarship helping to make this possible.”
Amanda Najera received the Underwood Scholarship 2013.
“I sincerely appreciate the support from the Underwood family on my education. The generosity was a great financial help to finish my PharmD at University of the Pacific in 2017, where I was involved in the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists and the Kappa Psi pharmaceutical fraternity. I am now serving the community as a pharmacist at CVS. With this great education, I am able to provide health care to a large audience and fulfill my lifelong goal of helping people get better, healthier, and happier.
