With spring in the air, I lean into bright cocktails that pack a punch. I love drinks that I can batch into larger portions so that when friends and family come over I’m not stuck mixing. Enter the,”Falernum, Damn Near Killed Him!” This beverage has something in it for everyone, with the perfect marriage of citrus melded with rich baking spice flavors. It can be served on crushed ice, over rocks, simply shaken, or in a big punch bowl with ice made from your favorite Jell-O mold. However you choose to drink it be sure to remind everyone who’s enjoying it that this flower has some thorns…
Falernum, Damn Near Killed Him!
½ oz Dos Maderas 5+3 Rum
¼ oz Don Q 151
¾ oz Bittermens Citron Sauvage
¾ oz Taylors Velvet Falernum
¾ oz fresh lime juice
2 dash AZ Bitters Lab, Orange Sunshine Bitters
Shake all ingredients together with ice in a shaker, then strain over crushed ice. Garnish with a very large bunch of mint (yes, even bigger than you think it should be).
The Dos Maderas 5+3 Rum is a perfect base spirit for this cocktail because of the complexity it carries from three years spent in sherry casks. Don Q shows up to fortify the beverage and ensures that the party is getting started off right. The Bittermens Citron Sauvage is a burst of bright citrus that shapes the overall flavor of the drink. Falernum is a rum-based liqueur that has been utilized in strong, tiki-style cocktails dating all the way back to Don the Beachcomber. Finally, Falernum is flavored with almond, ginger, lime, and sometimes vanilla, cloves, and allspice, all of which accentuate the warm flavors of the rum.
